This morning I visited HMP Feltham with the Prison Advice and Care Trust (PACT).
I spent the time at Feltham A which is a young offender institution (YOI) for young people aged 15 to 18. I learned about the vital family liaison and well being work of PACT.
One thing that really struck me talking to prison staff is that young people on remand do not have access to interventions which are programs and activities to help people change their behaviors and attitudes to reduce reoffending. These include education, employment, and health and wellbeing programs. The programs and support only kick in at sentence.
Half of the young people at Feltham are on remand often for long periods. That’s a lot of young people without help and support that could make a real difference.
I had the opportunity later at Guildhall to discuss this with the Home Secretary. It is an issue which should be looked into.
Huge thanks to Tamsin and Hayley at PACT for hosting me. This will not be my only visit.
